We’re well into autumn now and the leaves are falling thick and fast. It’s also been a very productive month work wise, so here’s what I’ve been up to.
My new novel is now with the proof readers 🙂 and it has a title! Scarborough Ball, the sequel to Scarborough Fair, will soon be up for pre-order and will be released on 16 December 2016. My wonderful cover designer is working on a fantastic cover and I’m very excited about it all. More news on this soon.
It’s been a great month for fiction books. I started off with My Counterfeit Self by indie author Jane Davis. Her latest novel is a thought-provoking account of the life of poet-activist Lucy Forrester and the two men in her life. Expertly researched and well-written, this novel explores personal relationships, political issues and the life of bohemian London in the sixties and seventies.
Dead Souls by Ian Rankin has been sitting on our bookshelves, like, forever. I don’t know how we came to have a copy. Anyway, I decided to give it a go, and it was terrific. Tightly written and atmospheric, with intertwining plot lines, I’ll definitely be checking out more of his crime fiction.
I also read another Val McDermid novel, this time a standalone thriller. The Vanishing Point is obviously inspired by the life of a famous British reality-show TV star. However, that is only the starting point for a great thriller with lots of twists and turns leading towards the surprising ending.
I’m finishing the month with another indie title, A Thousand Rooms by Helen Jones. This is the quirky story of Katie who has just been killed in a road accident. Not sure where she’s supposed to go now she’s dead, her disembodied self floats around the scenes of her life as she tries to find her way to Heaven. The writing is sharp, funny and poignant. A joy to read.
I sing with The City of Oxford Choir and our autumn concert was in the beautiful surroundings of Exeter College Chapel, Oxford. We sang a gorgeous programme of French sacred music. I’m on the back row, far left, just behind the lights 🙂
